Earsham CofE VA Primary Academy

History mission statement

Our vision is that the teaching of history gives pupils an understanding of the past through learning about human achievements and experiences. We will investigate sources such as pictures, stories, writing and artefacts to ask and answer questions about the past and how these impact the world we live in today. We will examine the children’s’ own personal history, and develop their sense of chronology through the discreet teaching of History from EYFS through to Key Stages 1 and 2. We aim to give our children a history curriculum which enables them to become confident, creative and independent learners..

Our History Units are taught on a rolling program to ensure a broad coverage of the curriculum.  Between 2 and 3 units will be covered each year. Our units are taken predominantly from the Historical Association or from Key Stage History, These have been written to give equal weight to historical knowledge and skills.

Links are made across units to embed learning, as well as links across subject areas to support children to apply their learning. Philosophical questions are regularly asked to children to ensure that they understand the significance of historical events to their lives today,

In EYFS children will look carefully at their personal history, and identify the changes that have occurred to them so far.

Additional Activities

We seek to broaden childrens’ real-life experiences both inside and outside of school through educational visits, visitors, experimentation, exploration and discovery.

Historical trips include:

  • Strangers Hall Toy Museum
  • Castle Museum Norwich for Anglo Saxons and Egyptians.
  • Gressenhall - houses and homes of the past and WW2 Evacuation day.

Where we cannot access historical enrichment locally, we have arranged for experts, such as Portals of the Past, to come and deliver bespoke learning to us.

Diversity is also an important part of our curriculum, and we look at Key events as they occur throughout the year, such as Black History Month and world Refugee day.
