Intent.
Geography mission statement
At Kingfisher we feel it is important to nurture and encourage natural curiosity about the world, to shape and direct it to turn the children into inquisitive, questioning learners who look closely at the world around them and begin to be able to interpret what they see. We will look at countries around the world and learn about the similarities and differences between British culture and others. We will learn to draw and interpret maps and to develop a variety of other skills through our topic work, including those of enquiry, problem-solving, investigating and presenting our work, calling on skills learned in Maths and English and applying them in new ways.
We also aim to instil in children a sense of environmental responsibility and encourage them to understand environmental issues at a local and global level. Running through all of our Geography work is the idea that we are motivating and inspiring our children to find out about their world, both physical and human, so that they can take an active part in contributing to and protecting this world as they grow up.
Implementation
Curriculum
Each term we plan full coverage of the curriculum using the ‘’ODDIZZI” scheme. 2-3 units are structured across the year that allow children to build on their knowledge and skills. Units throughout the year give children a balance of place based studies, locational knowledge and geographical processes.
In addition to this, we aim to provide opportunities for fieldwork, a wide range of different map work and use of explicit geographical vocabulary.
Additional Activities
Through Oddizzi, children use Classpals to make links with other pupils in the UK and throughout the world.
Children use Espresso News and First News to keep up to date with world events and issues,
Local and regional natural resources a used to enable children to engage with high quality field trips, for example, local farms, the coast and the Waveney River.
